Breaking! EU Identifies DBDPE as a Substance of Very High Concern, SVHC List to Expand to at Least 251 Entries

On October 9, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that the Member State Committee (MSC) unanimously agreed during its October meeting to classify 1,1’-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis[pentabromobenzene] (Decabromodiphenyl Ethane, DBDPE) as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC). ECHA plans to officially publish the notice in November 2025, adding it to the SVHC Candidate List. This move will further advance the phase-out of brominated flame retardants.

The Candidate List of SVHCs Adds 5 Substances, Updated to 240

Helsinki, 23 January 2024 - The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has officially announced the 30th batch of 5 substances of very high concern (SVHC), bringing the total number of substances on the SVHC list (also known as the Candidate List) to 240. ECHA has also updated the existing Candidate List entry for dibutyl phthalate to include its endocrine-disrupting properties for the environment. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was added in to the SVHC Candidate List in October 2008 in the first batch.
